THIS MONTH IN SUN HISTORY:

We're celebrating a pretty big event here at The Sun Record Company this month. The very first Sun Record ever released hit stores this month in 1952. This first release was truly different from anything that really made Sun a famous and lasting institution. Whereas Sun Records is famous for Rockabilly, Country, and Blues, this first record was none of those things.

It was SUN #175: Johnny London's "Drivin' Slow" with "Flat Tire" on the flip side. (Some of you may have noticed that our newsletters also started at #175, to keep with tradition). Johnny London was a local R & B and Jazz musician who walked into 706 Union one day to make some demos (he played alto-sax). He left such an impression on Sam Phillips that Sam decided to record him for the newly formed Sun Records.

A copy of this 78 hung on the entrance wall to 706 Union for years, a sure sign that if nothing else, Sam was proud of this record.
